Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM), the state's oldest and largest rape crisis center, was founded in 1973 to support survivors of sexual assault, their family and friends, and to help eradicate sexual violence. From these roots, we have grown into a major crisis intervention and resource center for all of southern Maine.

All of SARSSM's services are free & confidential. We offer services to women, men, adolescents, and children of all ages and backgrounds in York & Cumberland counties.

Please note: while we are happy to answer general questions & inquiries about our services and available community resources, at this time we are unable to provide advocacy via the internet. Thank you for your understanding.

Women's Self Defense Seminars
The Portland Quest Center is offering a series of Women's Self Defense seminars in conjunction with the Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM). For each seminar, the Quest Center will collect a suggested donation of $20 (or the amount you feel comfortable giving) which will benefit SARSSM. The seminars will introduce teenage and adult women to a variety of strategies designed to help defend against physical and sexual assault. The Portland Quest Center offers instruction in To-Shin Do martial arts, a unique and powerful system that combines energetic workouts and practical self-protection with meaningful personal development to improve focus and promote positive life choices.
